The ABB RED670 is an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) specifically designed for the protection, monitoring, and control of overhead lines and cables in all types of networks, including:

• Overhead lines and cables with up to five line terminals: This makes it suitable for protecting complex lines with multiple terminals, such as heavily loaded lines or multi-terminal lines.
• Impedance or solidly grounded networks: The RED670 can be configured to work in different types of network grounding arrangements.
• Series compensated systems: This allows it to be used on lines with series compensation, which can improve transmission efficiency but introduce additional challenges for protection schemes.

The RED670 uses a line differential protection scheme, which compares the currents entering and leaving the protected line section. If the difference between these currents exceeds a set threshold, it indicates a fault within the line section and the RED670 will trip the circuit breakers to isolate the fault.
